Barcelona showed ruthlessness against Bilbao to win the Spanish Copa Del Rey and will need to replicate that form in each of their remaining eight matches in the league if they want to end the season with an unlikely double. The Catalan giants have been able to recover from a poor start to the season under new manager Ronald Koeman.

Several Barcelona fans would have argued vehemently at the start of the season if they were told thatthe club would be fighting to win the double at this late stage of the season. Their start to the current season was not helped by the transfer rumours linking star player Lionel Messi with a move away from the club. While the future of Messi is still far from being decided, recent reports make for good reading for the Catalan faithfuls as they revealed that their talisman might sign a new deal that would take him beyond his current contract which expires this summer.

Messi showed that he is far from a finished player with his two goals in the 4-0 demolition of Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey final at the weekend as Barcelona were able to avenge their Spanish Super Cup final defeat at the hands of the same opposition. The Barcelona skipper scored the contender for the FIFA Puskas Award this year to add a third goal for his team after Frenchman Antoine Griezmann and Dutchman Frenkie De Jong had scored for Ronald Koeman’s men.

Argentine international Messi wrapped up the scoring with a fourth goal thus making it an emphatic win for his team. He was delighted with that Copa Del Rey win at the end of proceedings as demonstrated with him taking pictures with each member of the squad alongside the trophy won.

Messi and Barcelona resume their league campaign with an home game against Getafe on Thursday night and it’s a must-win if they want to finish the season as league champions. The Getafe encounter is one of eight matches that Barcelona must win to reclaim the league title from arch rivals Real Madrid.
